June 24, 2016

Okay let’s get our art on for the summer! I have picked 5 projects that are fun, easy and way cool for the family to do.  These projects will start today and 4 more to follow Monday-Thursday of next week.  Today I’ll give you a shopping list for all five projects so you can do all or pick and choose what projects you want to do.  This should be a great time for you and family to kick back and get artsy!!!

I only spent a total of $28.37 on all the supplies for all five projects. You may already have a few of these supplies at home so check your stash before you shop.   I’m always looking for ways to save so I will give suggestion on how to save on each project.  This list will be posted just under the supply list today and on each day of the project.  So let’s get started on today’s project.

4th of July P0P, BANG, POW T-shirt:

Supplies:

  • T-shirt (white or light color works best)
  • Toilet paper card board insert (at least 2 so you have one for each paint color)
  • Acrylic paint (red, blue and yellow)
  • Slick t-shirt paint in a squirt tube (white & black)
  • Card board to put inside of the t-shirt when painting

BEST WAY TO SAVE: You can use a t-shirt for each family member that they all ready have.  Maybe you already have paint you just need to dig it out.  If you down load the Hobby Lobby app onto your phone you can use a 40% off on one item.  Print the coupon from your computer, one for each kiddo. When you go shop give each kid cash, a coupon and 1 item to check out with.  That’s big saving!

Step 1: THIS STEP NEEDS TO BE DONE AND THEN IT MUST DRY COMPLETELY BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT STEP.  It might be best done the night before or in the early morning so that you can finish it up with all the color in the afternoon or evening.

When painting the t-shirt it is very important that you make sure you put a piece of card board or poster board inside the shirt.  If you don’t the paint will bleed to the backside of the shirt.  Once that is done you are ready to start drawing with the black slick tube paint.  Decide where you are going to put the firecrackers on the shirt.  I did 3 in random spots but far enough apart so that when applying the burst of color they don’t over lap.  Adults might have to help with this step so that the kids don’t get frustrated with drawing free hand.  I drew the firecrackers first then put the words inside of them.

ATTENTION LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES: I shouldn’t have put the words so close to the firecracker.  The second time I would write the words after the shirt was finished. The burst overlapped my 2016 so I had to repaint it at the end.  I think it’s hard to see on the color but I’ve learned my lesson.

Step 2: FIRST STEP NEED TO BE DRY BEFORE MOVING ON.

Now you are ready for the red, blue and yellow.  First cut stripes in the toilet paper card board roller about half way up.  Spread them out with your hand making sure they are all flat when pressed against the table.  When putting paint on the  plate make sure it is in a large spiral.  This will ensure that the paint gets on all of the little arms of the roller that you cut. Dip the roller in the RED paint making sure you get paint all over it.  Place it at the top of each firecracker, don’t spin it just press it down and pull it straight back up.  Repeat this step with the BLUE paint next.  The yellow is done a bit different I used the bottom of the bottle of paint. I just sat the bottle down in the paint at then stamped in onto the t-shirt in the middle of the firecracker burst. I finished ofF the burst with the white slick tube paint by putting a few lines on the blue burst it just gave it a bit of punch.

Step 3: NOW IS THE TIME TO PUT 4TH OF JULY 2016 (Learn from my mistakes)

Using the black slick tube paint write your words where you think they will be seen the best on the shirt.

Step 4: ADDING TO THIS PROJECT FOR A BIGGER BANG!

You can add to this project and make it go a bit longer if you want.  Once the shirt is dry you can flip it over and add a few firecrackers to the back side as well.  JUST MAKE SURE THE FRONT IS 100% DRY BEFORE YOU FLIP!

Now it’s  done! You can make the entire family a 4th of July t-shirt.  Maybe put your family name on the back so that you are all matching.  I love the 4th of July just seems so American and fresh.  To me its better the new years maybe because it’s cold on New Years and 4th of July is summer and warm.  I don’t know, I just like it better.

I hope that you plan ahead and get this t-shirt done before the 4th of July.  It’s a lot of fun to make for the entire family.  I will post a picture of my Ethan in his shirt. I’m sure he will be so cute.  Have a Blue Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend!
