Laundry Room Makeover Reveal

July 11, 2016

I’m so excited about my new laundry room.  In past blogs I called it the pass through because that’s what I did for 6 years. I can always tell when a room in my home needs a redo because I avoid it like its gonna suck me in a black hole.  This laundry room was a black hole with no organization or decor.  I did laundry once a week and the rest of the time it was just a path to get in and out of the garage.  Last year it started to get to me. Every day when I would come home from school I would avoid looking as I walked through.  It still looked the way it was when we moved in tiny, beige yellow walls and white washed 1990 cabinets.  It was to say the least “BORING”.

So here we are at the REVEAL  of this amazing make over.  It was hard to take before and after pictures because of the size of the room.  I did my best and I hope that you can tell how great this redo turned out.   You will notice the dryer is not in the picture that’s because Greg removed it before I could snap it.  Where to begin telling you all that I did.  Well I start with I never intended to buy a new washer and dryer but my dryer after almost 13 years went out.  It would have been over $200 to fix it plus a house call so out it went and to Lowes we go to get a new set.  I got Samsung in beautiful sparkling Blue.  These just set my heart on fire when I saw them.  I paid extra for the color but Greg didn’t seem to mind because I was so happy.  I save on so many other things around our home that extra $100 for the Blue Happy color was ok.  Delivery was set for Saturday so I went home to get all the rest of the things done.

I started with clearing out the laundry room and wiping everything down.  You can not imagine how dirty things get when you ignore them.  The lighting was bad and a yellow tint so until I got in there and started cleaning I had no idea this was that bad.  That happens to all of us as we get busy and don’t have time to slow down and really look at things.  Well it was all clean and ready for paint on the walls.  I painted  light gray the same color through out my home. I also took the time to paint the base boards and the door in a crisp white.  I moved to the upper cabinets next.  I started to paint them the black like my kitchen but was out of that color.  I was so frustrated because I thought that I had a gallon that was full.  As I was looking for it I can across the smoked blue I painted the kitchen island.  This turned out to be a great thing because it was the perfect color and didn’t make the room so dark.  I sanded off the edges, gave it a coat of clear protection and added the handles to match the kitchen.  On to the next project in the room and that was the counter tops that would sit over the washer and dryer.  I wanted to have counter tops to protect my new machines and to have a place to sit the things I need.  Having a place to fold was also a great plus. I didn’t want to spend a lot so I went to Lowes and bought planks of wood in 2 sized I started with a 3 inch board then rotated small and large to the back wall.  I left a small bite of space for easy repair.  The counter top were $40 and that included wood, screws and stain.

Almost done but I wanted to decorate the room so it felt more like an attachment to my home and not just a pass through.  Over the door I added the large barn wood sign that says LAUNDRY.  I love things like this it kinda defines the room but in a fun way.  You can see the pretty new light that Greg installed in the picture of the LAUNDRY room sign.  It is so pretty and the lighting is so much better than that yellow old globe light.  At one time I had a basket on top of the washer that I stuffed all my plastic sacks in.  I’m sure you reuse these as well but the basket took up so much room.  I opted for a wall hanger that keeps them all tucked away and using the real-estate up the wall is a winner.  I left the same hook for my dog leashes it’s important for me to keep those handy.  On top of the washer I keep a large wicker basket for dirty kitchen towels and pool towels.  This keeps them off the floor and up where I can see when I have a full load to do.

There you have it, a laundry room redone from boring and avoiding to Oh my goodness done.  I have already done my laundry a few times.  I’m looking for things to wash,  I’m scraping up things as fast as I can just so I can be in this sweet little space.  It is amazing how just doing this little room has made a difference in how I feel when I come in that back door.  This year I will have a great place to put my things I need for school.  I always prepare my things the night before and lay it all on the kitchen table.  Not anymore I have these great wood counter tops right at the back door.  I hope you have a Blue Happy idea in your head for something you want to redo in your home.  Have a great Monday because it is the best day of the week.
