Rolling Around

February 13, 2017

How many times have you needed to move things from one room to the other. Or you need to serve food in a different room of the house or on the patio. What about if you have a small kitchen no center island but you want extra work space. Well these little 50’s and 60’s metal carts are the answer to all those home decor problems.

I see these carts all over at thrift stores, garage sales, auctions and online sales. I buy them up when the price is right they are an easy redo and the outcome is fantastic. This one rolled really well and went for a sweet low price in the last auction at Rustybydesignauction.com my favorite auction house in Forney Texas. I grabbed it with a few other things and brought it home to recreate it.

The only thing to recreate was the color because the paint job had seen better days. Avocado green is a color being used these days but I wanted to make it more updated with a bit of fun.  I promise it is green this isn’t the best picture to show that. I started by trying to use up a few of those half or more empty spray paint cans.  I didn’t want it to be boring and just one color.  Why not use 3 colors that coordinated like black, medium gray and light gray.  I cleaned the trays really well and sanded off any rust.  I paint each tray a different color and set them aside.  The legs were a different story with all the spotty rust here and there.  I was gonna prime and paint them but decided to sand them first.  I started sanding and to my surprise they were so nice under neither the rust I just left them plain.  Once every thing was dry I reattached the trays to the legs. I loved it with the 3 colors but I thought it need a bit more to have that creative touch.  Yep out came the stencils and this is how it came out.  It has a whimsical look that will add a bit of fun in any room.

My husband said well its a little girly how can it be used.  Well I’m sure he was sorry he ask because I went on for at least 45 minutes on all the ways to use this cute little cart.  How about in the laundry room to fold clothes on and then roll them to each room to be put away.  Maybe in an office to put your printer on top of with storage for copy paper.  I also like the idea using it on the patio in the summer months to serve food off of and then back in the kitchen for extra work space.  These were only a few ideas I gave him.  All I got back was a blank look as if he was saying sorry I ask.

Recreating something is easy as painting and finding a place to make it work for you in your home.  You don’t have to spend a fortune or even by new.  It’s all about thinking outside the box.  I hope your Monday is Blue Happy and special.
