From My Drawing To Reality

April 13, 2017

A few weeks back I blogged about the process I go through when I start a new piece. Some are easy as painting and small repairs but others are full on construction. When it’s full on construction I start with sketching out my plan. Most of the time what I start out planning in my head isn’t what comes out at the end. This piece was NO exception, it came out way different. Not because I didn’t follow my plan but because I followed my creative soul and that always wins over.

The piece I’m talking about is the square boxes that I was given. My besties husband Tim gave them to me and I knew I wanted to do something really special. It was instant the direction I wanted to go.  My head started creating a stacked box organizing system.  I played with the boxes for over a week before I decided on a  way to lay them out.  Once that was decided I started sketching out my plan.  There were many sketches some really good and others not so good.  When I finalized my plan most of the box fronts had doors on them.  As I worked through the plan that didn’t happen. It evolved into this great piece that will be great for any entryway, bathroom, kids room or family room.  Really you can use it in just about any room of your home.  My daughter has this massive shower that has a wall to wall glass.  The cabinet to store towels is not close to the shower door.  This piece would be great to sit along the glass wall to store towels and shower needs.  One more thought would be a babies room how cool to store diapers in this.

Basically I started by attaching all of the boxes and adding the base on the bottom.  I’m not good at the caster thing so I called in back up. Greg flipped it over and attached the casters on the bottom so it is easily moved around your home.  Once that was all done I flipped it over and started painting.  I painted the boxes in different colors that worked together.  A light spring green, a light teal blue and medium gray.  The outside of the boxes I painted in cream-white so it would work with most any decor.  When all the paint was dry I sanded the edges so it had a great shabby chic look.  I bought a crate style box and painted medium gray.  I wanted it to have a bit of a wow so I added an old frame that I painted in the same medium gray.  That makes that box special so you can high light something special. At first Greg didn’t like it but he came around to my side of creativity and attached it for me.  I added the hardware to give it that industrial touch and have a way to move it.  On the back I covered each box individually so that if you want you can open up one or move of the boxes by removing the back piece.  Ta Da and it’s done!

I love this piece because it started out a pile of boxes and ended up a functional piece for any home.  I love to create these pieces and love sharing them with you.  It makes me Blue Happy and that is a great way to live.
