My Dirty Little Secret Makeover Reveal!

July 12, 2016

So my dirty little secret is my Christmas closet.  It has grown over the last 30 years from a box of glass ornaments and a Charlie Brown tree with no lights to a closet full of memories and way to many clearance items.  I do love love love Christmas and all the decorating.  I don’t think I’m over the top but Greg says its way over the top.  I will admit that my snowman collection is a bit out of control and needs to be paired down.  It’s hard for me because I think okay I don’t want this or that but as I put it in the give away bag I suddenly remember a special memory. It’s a battle to fill the bag and not the closet.  I decided it was time to let go and clean out what I don’t use any more.  For the past few years I have not even used half of what is stored in this mess of a closet.  Even if I did buy some new items for Christmas there is no room to store it.

As you know Greg and I shop estate sales almost every weekend.  We have noticed at almost all the sales there is this room full of Christmas decor.  We jokingly call it the Christmas room and laugh our heads off when we walk in one of these rooms together.  I’m sure that the people who run the sale think we are a bit crazy.  The reason  we laugh is because he keeps telling me that when we die and the kids have an estate sale there will be a Christmas room that other people will laugh at.  I decided I didn’t want to be that old lady that leaves her kids with a bunch of old Christmas decorations.  So I’m cleaning it all out, down to about a 1/4 of what I have.  This was a big job, like I said I get emotional about what the item was bought for and I wanna hang on to it.

I’m a container person, what that means is I like to have everything stored in containers.  It makes it organized and has a clean look.  I already had several tubs but some things are in card board boxes.  It’s okay to store in card board but I recently watched a video online that said card board harbors bugs.  WHAT THE HECK! I’m totally grossed out by that so I set out to remove all boxes in my closet’s.   I know it’s  a bit over the top but at least I don’t have bugs rooming with my memories.  LOL!

I started by going through everything.  I had set up 4 boxes marked give away, sale, kids and keep.  Once I got to the end of this mess I decided to go back through the keep box to make sure there wasn’t a few things more I could put somewhere else. No surprise I moved at least a fourth of the keep box somewhere else.  I’ll be honest I didn’t go through my snowmen.  I decided I would do that at Christmas as I set them up.  I mean really, I have over 250 snowmen so that would have taken at least a weekend.  Now you know another dark secret of mine.  Well after I went through it all and put what I was keeping back in the closet is was most certainly a better looking closet.  Now the finishing touch on this closet will be the sliding barn door.  That is Greg’s project hopefully this weekend.  We ordered the track a while back and it was the wrong size.  So we reordered and it should be here very soon.  There were websites to order from that could have got it here quicker but I went the saving money route so we have to wait a bit for delivery. As soon as my daughter moves into her new house all the barbies at the top of the closet will be moved to her house.  There barbies are all from her childhood and I know she wants them in her own home and not mine.

I’ll do a blog on the barn door and show you how easy it is to get rid of doors in your home that get in the way.  That is why we are replacing the closet door that opens with a sliding barn door.  I’m having a great week so far, how about you?  Tuesday in Dallas is bright and Blue Happy.  Tomorrows blog is full of info about my exercise program, supplements  I have taken on my new health journey and so much more. Have a great Blue Happy Day.

    1. Girl. We are more alike than u know lol. First I have the same bed comforter on Morgan’s bed. 2 I have a snowman tree!!! Every year I hang all my snowman ornaments in a white tree. I’ll send u a picture sometime. And lastly I too am a storage box person. No cardboard boxes for me!! Lol. I am an avid scrapbooker so I have found that I take pictures of things and scrapbook them and journal the memory of it. It makes letting it go much easier. ie: Courtney’s stuffed animal collection. She will be 26 next month and went thru them a few years back and kept a few of the very special ones. She can pass them on to her baby. But we made picture of the rest for her scrapbook and it was done. I do this on so many things because living in a cabin there’s not a lot of room lol. I love all your post and can’t wait to see the door. Have a blessed evening!!

      1. Lol Rhonda we are so much a like. I have done the picture taking thing many times, but I have yet to start the scrapbooking. I keep telling myself I’ll do it when I’m older. Guess I need to realize that “older” is now. I’ll try to start it this fall when I don’t like being outside in the cold. Yes when it gets 69 here in Texas we think it’s cold. Im sure you guys giggle at us warmed weather Texans. Thanks for reading my blog I just like to share things that I think might inspire people to create with the occasional rant about my feelings. I hope you have a very blessed Blue Happy Day.
