You Can Create Tuesday: Landscape Painting

August 18, 2015

If you need a colorful painting to hang in a special spot in your home this is an easy one today. It really is one that anyone can do.

Step 1 – draw your landscape

Determine the size and start to draw. If you look closely at the drawing it really is just lines and 3 very simply trees. Start by drawing the center line not quite in the middle of the page. Then use lines to create the hills in the front of the painting. Follow this step with drawing the 3 simple trees which are trunks and pear-shaped tops. The line of trees that come across the canvas is just one top line and one bottom line. The mountain behind it is done with 2 mountains one behind the other.

Step 2 – add in blue, white, and yellow

Okay now you are ready to paint. I painted the sky first using a light blue and white with a touch of yellow in the far right corner. I used a brush and painted in an X pattern putting the white down first then Xing in a small amount of blue. When I got to the far right I did the same with the yellow. I used a medium yellow to paint in one of the hills and put a little on the tree.

Step 3 – add in red and purple

Red and Purples are next. It’s starting to come alive as the color starts to wake up the canvas. I painted the hill in the front of the painting with red. It seemed to give the painting a solid foundation with the color. I used 2 different purples for the mountains behind the trees. They are very close in color so you have to look really close to see the difference. I used the dark purple for under the trees and the mountain that is behind the front mountain. This gives it depth and shadow.

Step 4 – add in green

WOW the green gives it the richness of color. I did several things in this step so look closely. First I added green to the smaller trees in the back ground and to one of the hills. Here is where you need to look close. I also added the same dark green to the 3 large trees. The green is so vibrant but adding the red to the 3 big trees just wakes it up.

Step 5 – add in light green, brown, and black

Okay we are down to the final colors. Lets do the light green first. Lets add it to the tops of the smaller back ground trees and then to the top of the 2 side bigger trees. I painted the last hill dark brown that gives the piece weight and solid value. Lastly I painted the small tree trunks black as well as the 3 larger tree trunks.

I hope you will take a moment and paint this piece. Grab some coffee and a quiet weekend afternoon and enjoy yourself. Share your art with me on social media! Just tag it with #bluehappyliving! Painting can be so relaxing and truly make you Blue Happy!
