Part 2 Reveal Dressing Up The Dresser

February 4, 2016

So today, Thursday is the day to dress up the dresser.  I’ve had this dresser for about 7 years.  I bought it as a set when we lived in Lucas. I still love it but its time for a change.  It’s still in really good shape but when we moved into this house I decided to sit a very large TV on top of the dresser.  To protect it I put rubber shelf liner on top so it wouldn’t get any more scratches.  Well the heat from the TV melted the rubber shelf liner to the top.  What  a mess!  I tried cleaning it off and it isn’t moving, the rubber stuff will have to be sanded off.

I plan on doing the dresser to match the bed and my bedside table.  The paint is called Midnight fog and it is beautiful.  I will have to repair the top by first sanding it then making sure that all the residue from the rubber is gone. It also needs to have a good old fashion clean with warm water and a mild soap.  I prefer to use dawn dish washing soap. It’s mild enough not to harm the wood but strong enough to cut through the dirt and grim.  I’ll start with 2 coats of paint letting it dry for most of the day.  Once dry I’ll do a quick sand to the edges and corner for that old shabby chic look I love so much.  Finishing up with a few clear coats for protection.

Oh the hardware, my favorite part of doing a piece.  Hardware is what will make or break a piece like this.  I could leave the old brushed nickel hardware that came with it but, although it’s functional I have bigger plans for this dresser.  I’m going to take it back to the past all the while giving it an up date.   I have decided that I’m not gonna let the cat out of the bag about the hardware for the drawers.  That will be a secret until Friday’s reveal.

Most of the furniture in this room is recycled, bits and pieces put together to make a comfortable and cozy room.  I’m not sure if I could go out and buy straight up new furniture at a store, pretty sure it wouldn’t make me happy.  Sometimes we think new makes it better when renewed makes it a part of the past and future.  By reusing old furniture you are giving it new character and charm that you can’t go buy in any store.   I can’t wait to get this all finished and reveal it to you on Friday.  Thursday is gonna be a very long Blue Happy Day.  Hope your day is Blue Happy too!
