Summer Art Project #4 Show off your Art!

June 29, 2016

Are you having art fun yet?  I have enjoyed doing all of these summer art projects and #4 was a blast.  I did this for my grandson who is always giving me art that he has done.  I love to show it off and so I wanted a place in my studio to hang the things he gives me.  I’m a very proud Lolli and love showing off his art work.  This project doesn’t take many supplies and can be done in just an hour or so.

SUPPLIES:

  • One wood letter that is the first initial of the child’s name.  I bought this large E at Hobby Lobby for $2.99
  • Paint in the colors you will paint it.  I used the paint left from the other 3 projects and that saves money
  • Paint Brush
  • Cup for water
  • paper towel
  • 1 wood clothing pen
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black tulip paint

STEP 1:

Lay out paper so you protect the area while you paint.   Get all your supplies laid out in front of you so you don’t have to stop the process getting things.  You need your wood letter, tray of paint colors you will use and paint brushes.  If you want at this point you can take a regular pencil and draw a design onto the wood letter before you start to paint.  If you are feeling a little free-spirited you can just start to paint and see where it takes you.  Either way makes it your own design and cover the entire wood letter with paint.  After you are done painting and you have covered the surface completely including the edges sit it aside and let it dry.  It could take up to 2 hours depending on how thick you have the paint.  You can speed the drying time by putting it outside in the sun or using a blow dryer.

STEP 2:

Once your paint is dry it’s time to add the black tulip paint.  You can make designs with it in any pattern or you can out line the design you already painted,  I added the other letters in Ethan’s name at the bottom of the big E. This step makes it your own personality and give it that extra special something.  You could also write a quote with the tulip paint or even a favorite verse.  It’s all up to you and how you finish off your letter.

STEP 3:

Step 3 is how you will make the wood letter a place to hang you art work.  I used one of the wood clothing pens attached to the left side of the E.  I used hot glue to attach it so it could handle holding future art.  The wood clothing pen can be attached as is or you can paint it out to blend in to the design on the letter.  You could also paint it out in a color that makes it stand out it really is what ever you want it to look like.

EXTRA HINTS THAT HELP:

I used a hanger I got from Lowes and attached it to the back so I can hang this up in my art studio.  There are several types to buy and a few you can make.  If you want to save a bit you can use string and make a small loop and hot glue it to the back.  I needed 2 because the E is a bit large.  If I only put 1 in the center when you hang art work the E would hang to the left along with the art.  So make sure you put enough hangers so your art hangs at its best.

I hope you are enjoying the art projects for summer time fun.  There is one more and that will be on Thursday.  It’s a great project to end the 5 day session because this one will let you bag it all up.  Have a great Hump day Wednesday and make it a Blue Happy day!
