A Drawer No More

September 30, 2016

Lots of times when I’m out trash trolling I come across a piece or two that are in really bad shape. At that point I’m not trash trolling I’m in rescue mode. I get out my handy screw driver and remove any and all parts that I can salvage into another project.

On a Wednesday morning trash troll I found this old sewing cabinet. It was heavy and needed way more repairs than it was worth. I was lucky it had great hardware so I started to salvage that. When I pulled out the drawers and there were 4 of them I discovered they were great as well. I salvage them  along with a few legs and a nice piece of wood from the fold down top.

A drawer is a great piece and can be turned into many things.

  • hang them on the wall for a display shelf
  • Use them under your bed for easy to get top storage.  You can do this with or without wheels on the bottom.
  • In a kitchen cabinet to sit on the shelf for packets of things like pasta, seasoning and so much more

My favorite all time thing to do is fix it all up and use it in the bathroom right on the counter top.  How many bathrooms have you been in and there are bottles of this and that on the counter top.  I get it having it right there to use at your finger tips makes getting ready way easier.  I’m so guilty of things all over my counter top, but this drawer is the solution.

There are a few easy step to get your counter top organized and clear.

  1. Remove the hardware from the front of the drawer
  2. Lightly sand the outside and the inside of the drawer
  3. Wipe down the drawer completely making sure it is clean of all sanding dust.
  4. Pick 2 colors one for the inside and 1 for the outside
  5. Paint the inside first and then the outside
  6. place a lift on the back of the drawer
  7. Let it dry completely then sand the edges as you desire
  8. *Clear coat finish is so important because it’s going to be in a bathroom and moisture isn’t your friend.
  9. Attach the hardware
  10. Fill it will all your bathroom goodies

*Number six is important because the front of the drawer will be higher than the back.  This is because the lip of the drawer front is lower in most cases.  You will know by looking at it. You can use small blocks of wood and paint them out in the color of the drawer.  I used old hardware I found on kitchen cabinet doors in someones trash.  You just need to find something that will make the drawer level.

This can be a great organizer and a great gift.  Go to Bath and Body works and buy those pre-bagged items in your teachers favorite scent.  Put them in a drawer that has been redone.  I promise she will love it and you will be teachers pet. Friday is the beginning of a new weekend so have a Blue Happy one!!
