All Dressed Up

January 26, 2017

Old dresser are a dime a dozen and lets face it most of them have seen better days. This little dresser was no acceptation on the better day thing. It needed so many repairs I thought I wanted to push it aside and move on to something else. I stuck with it and now its ready to live out it’s restored life for many more years.

So many places to patch on this one.  I’m pretty sure that the previsions owners pushed it across concrete before they tossed it out.  It has great detail work and I knew it had potential.  I decided to give it a good make over so it’s damage and bad days were behind it.  Restoring it only made sense because I love a great challenge.  I used wood fill with a sand base to fill all of the spots missing veneer. That had to sit over night to dry all the way through the fill product.  Once that was dry the next day was sanding and sanding.  I had to make sure the damaged spots were smooth with the original wood.

Once upon a time this was someones grandmothers dresser.  She filled it with her belongings and more than likely she was quiet proud of owning such a beautiful piece.  I wanted to use a color that gave it life again.  I picked duck egg in the Annie Sloan paint line.   As I said on Monday I’m in love with this paint line. So amazing and there are many dealers around that sell it.  I purchased many new colors you will be seeing over the next few weeks. Just painting a piece of furniture in a color isn’t my style.  I like to add a bit of a twist to make it stand out and have that special something that makes you love it. I decided one of those special things would be leaving the top drawer the original stain.  It was in perfect shape so no repairs were needed.  I’m using all the old hardware because it is stunning and has so much detail.  The lighter color of paint will make the hardware that much more beautiful.  I stenciled on with gold paint and let that sit over night. Once it was dry I took my sander to the piece and sanded it all over.  Removing the paint on the corners and sanding away most of the gold.  It looks worn, vintage, shabby chic and so beautiful.  I left the insides of the drawers the original stain.  The drawers were clean and didn’t need more than a good cleaning.

This dresser could have been used just the way it was with all the damage.  After all the drawers worked and it would serve a purpose.  Why not invest a little time and paint to give it a restored life.  It’s really easy to do and all you need is a little time and a bit of a trying spirit.  I love to just jump in and start sometimes with it all planned out and other times I just let it happen.  In those times that I let it just happen amazing things come.  I can’t wait to start my next project. Have a Blue Happy Thursday and make it one of memories.
