Not So Quick To Judge!

January 24, 2017

While going through our inventory Greg pulled a piece out and said this is taking up space lets toss it. No way can you make anything out of it. Not so quick Greg don’t judge the piece by its damage. You gotta look beyond that and look at the real beauty. He did and he agreed it was a good piece and it had potential. I thought I was in the twilit zone Greg agreeing with me.

Half a day later it was a piece that even Greg said was good.  Hours before it was on his list of get it out of here. Now he said he would like it in his office. No Greg, it’s going in the Blue Happy booth we can’t keep it all. I get lots of emails, Facebook messages, text and calls asking me if I want furniture they need to rid of.  I always ask for a photo and determine by that if I want to go pick it up.  A few months ago a lady I bought the telephone table from contacted me about an old dresser/night stand she wanted to get rid of.  I heard loud and clear its free if you want it, so without a photo I said okay I’ll pick it up.  I drug Greg along to help me lift it.  It was in okay shape so in the truck and home it went.

Upon further looking the bottom two drawers were falling apart.  The drawers were not of quality wood so fixing them was really out of the questions.  I did save the drawer fronts to make pillow boxes later down the road.  The only drawer that was in good shape was the top drawer.  It was still very sturdy and strong so now what?  I made it into a multifunctional table that could be used in most any room in your house.  In the bathroom it could serve as a towel and cosmetic storage, in the kitchen for extra storage of dishes,  in the bedroom as a night stand or maybe even in the family room as an end table.  I’m sure you could come up with more idea’s.

I started by sanding all over the base, top and drawer.  I removed all the stain from the top and strained it a darker color.  I only lightly sanded the base then painted it with 2 coats of Annie Sloan paint.  I painted the inside with the same color to give it an over all finished look.  The bottom of the table needed to be covered by wood.  I had this old dresser top that was no longer with us thanks to the person that really tossed it out.  I decided to sand it and then paint it out in the olive color to match the rest of the piece.  That is when it happened, I started sanding the pink, yes I said pink paint away and this beautiful off white, green and yellow started to show through.  No way was I covering up that.  I sanded it to where I wanted it and used stain over the top of it to age it.  That lead to a me adding stain the rest of the piece over the green paint.  It looks old and worn but ready to give any room a pop of color and vintage shabby chic look.  I finished with 2 coats of Valspar clear coat.  The finishing touch was the black knobs I had in my studio.  I bought these knobs from a Facebook friend who often sales things she no longer needs.  I was the lucky person that grabbed them up for only $2 for all 6 of them.

Before you toss something out don’t judge it.  Wait and rethink on how it can be used in your home.  If you can’t find away to redesign it or redo it.  Maybe the next best thing to do is see if a family or friend might need it.  Someone else might see beauty that you can’t see.  Tuesday is gonna be a blessed day I can just feel it.  Hope yours is Blue Happy!
