Farm Table: Do You Want One?

February 16, 2018

Almost any wood table can be turned into a farm style table. It’s really not that hard to do your own makeover. Recently my sweet friend Carol gave me an old table she had stored in her garage. As I drove home I thought this table could be so cute all dressed up like a farm table. So I set out to take it one step further. Using it to prove a point that any table can be a farm table. The table didn’t come with chairs so I found 4 matching chairs and made benches out of them.  Greg cut the backs off the chairs and we added simple 1×4 slates to make the bench tops.  Using Chalk Country Crisp Collar I put 2 coats of paint on both benches and the table.  After it dried I sanded back the edges and corners for the farm table worn look and finished it off with Defender for protection.  Now it’s ready for any home that is in need of a farm table to share those special family dinners.  More seating can be added at the ends of the table with 2 captains chairs.

The next table proves you can take a traditional table and take it down the Farm table path.  This table was done for my daughter and her new house over a year ago.  It was given to me by my friend Joy. I stained the wood on top and painted out the base of the table.  I used the chairs that came with it to make 2 side benches.  I found the 2 end chairs at Doc Holliday’s, repainted them and recovered the seats.  By doing all of this it made the glass fit in without making it an off piece with traditional glass.  She and her family enjoy the table daily and every guest that comes over compliments it.

This last table showcased in the blog is one built from all kinds of pieces.  I did this table for my son and daughter in law.  They have a small apartment and needed a table that would fit without overwhelming the space.  I bought the table at a garage sale for $25 and the chairs at an auction for less than $20.  I did captain chairs on the end and 2 wood chairs on the side.  I did one side with a bench because of space restrictions.  My son and daughter love the bohemian look so I did it in black with a stained top.  It looks great in their apartment and they have had many dinner parties with lots of compliments.

There really isn’t to many tables you can turn into a farm table.  Paint, sand paper, and a few adjustments to seating you can fill your home with a great piece of furniture.  I love all of these tables and the first one is ready for you to buy for your home.  February 16th -18th this table is on special for only $249 so come and get it up at Doc Holliday’s 113 S Birmingham Wylie.
