A Piece Just For Me

April 23, 2018

I do so many projects a week I just really don’t have time to do one for me. This weekend I took the time to do one for my home. I’ve been talking about doing it for weeks now. I found this piece on the curb in my neighborhood on my way home from the gym. At first I thought I was going to redo it for my booth at Doc’s but the more I thought about it I wanted it. So it got pushed back to the back of my studio and there it has sat for months.

Monday’s blog is about organizing and this piece will be all about that.  I’m going to prove that you can use almost every area of your home to organize your belongings.  This is a typical buffet used in most dining rooms in the past. It has storage galore right down to the velvet lined drawers for silverware.  I’m gonna turn the organizing up on its side and make it storage for the unusual.  No I’m not turning the piece up on its side just your thoughts of what this should be used for.  Let’s face it not to many people have formal silverware, dishes and dining rooms.  So let’s move this piece to a different room and repurpose it for a different kinda storage.

The makeover was simple I painted it out in Crisp Collar from Chalk Country and protected it with Defender.  I stained the top to contrast against the Crisp Collar.  I left the velvet lined drawer simple for the fact that the glue would be damaging to the drawer underneath.  As for its new home, out of the dining room and now it rest under my television in my family room.  I use to have a dark piece that sat there but with the dark floors it was heavy and dark.  This new larger piece and bright color woke up that side of the room.  All that is left to do is fill it up with what will be stored there.

Our family room is open to the entry way in our home around the front door.  We go in and out that door often or at least we will pass this piece as we leave out the back door.  My home is relatively small but functional.  In this cabinet I decided to store things like gloves, scarves, tote bags, purses, hoodies, any and all items we only use on occasion. It only made sense to me to do this otherwise they are just piled up in our closet and lost.  This way we will always know where these things are and we don’t have to dig for them.  Winter in Texas is day by day and sometimes hour by hour so knowing where these things are will be a win in our home.

Organizing and decorating is an out of the box thinking at it’s best.  You have to look at your home as one big organized box.  If you know where things are you spend less time looking for things and more time enjoying things.
