When You Get That Call

August 29, 2018

Several times a month I get that call telling me there is a piece of furniture on the side of the road. Or my favorite call is “can you come get this stuff out of my garage”. I’m always up for a great pick in a junk pile. I’m not shy and will pick through anyones garbage if I think there is a piece of furniture that needs to be given a restored life. Recently I got that call from a friend that was redoing a home and she needed a piece gone as of yesterday. So off I went to pick it up. Most of the time when I get those calls I get no photo’s, no real description and most of the time it’s a text. I go into a pick-up not knowing if I drove all that way for nothing or will it be a treasure.

This piece was such a treasure. Restored it can serve in many places in the home. I would love to see it in an entryway, under a TV in a family room to store blankets and or games or maybe in a dining room or kitchen as a server. It would also be great for a bedroom because we all need more storage.  Personally I have a piece almost just like it in my family room under our TV. We store blankets on the sides and in the drawers we store gloves and scarves. We love having those things right by the door as we walk out.

I decided to go with Pure Pewter from Chalk Country. I love a product in my line called Casting. You apply it with a paint knife and a stencil. It takes about 24 hours to cure and then a light sand. You paint right over the top and when you sand back the edges you lightly sand away a little of the paint. It is such a great way to add texture to any piece. You can also add paint to the casting to change its color.

I’m truly blessed to have so many people looking out for me.  The calls always make me stop and think about how much I’m loved and cared for.  Blue Happy Living is about restoring things from furniture, to health and building on what you have in life.  New isn’t always the best.  Multiple things don’t always make your life and home better.  Just like people and your home all things can be restored to live on.  Giving up and tossing things out isn’t the answer.  The city dumps are full of things unwanted, full of things that still have life and full of things that are trashed for no other reason than “I’m tired of it”.  We have become people of disregard and just buy new. We want instant gratification with no work.  We think if its dirty and worn it somehow says we don’t have much or we can’t afford new.   To me that is so very sad and I have way more respect for those that restore instead of go to a store.  I once was that person that wanted to keep up with what my friends bought.  I wanted my house to be a cookie cutter of furniture stores and what was popular.  Oh my how my life and heart has changed. Me, I’m just over here trying to restore a little part of life.

This beautiful piece is now restored and ready for a new life in someone’s home.  It is already up at Doc Holiday’s Emporium 113 S Birmingham Wylie.  September the 8th is the sidewalk sale at Doc’s 9am until 6pm.  Blue Happy Living will be 20% off in side and out with a few things marked down even lower. Hope to see you there!
