Slap On The Color

September 25, 2019

With the farm house crave these days it’s easy to get in a white rut. Don’t get me wrong I love the white and I love me some farm house. My artist soul craves the color. I had this crazy idea and I decided to make it happen. What you see in this blog might make you think I’ve lost it. I gathered a few pieces I had in storage and off I went to my studio to make this colorful explosion happen.

Adding a pop of color in your home is the best way to show personality. I’m a blue person, no surprise there so all kinds of blues are popping around my house in the most unexpected places.  I have friends that love red, yellow, pink and even lime green but there are no signs of those colors in their homes.  WHYYYYYYYYYYYY! If you love something you should have it in your home decor or at least a touch of it to make you smile.  There is nothing special to these pieces I restored.  I painted, sanded, added a whimsical touch and clear finished them just like I’ve done so many times.  What makes them special is the color and fun they will add to your home.

If you like lots of colors and can’t decide on that pop color here is a helpful hint.  Look around your home to find inspiration.  Maybe your pop color is in a piece of art work, in a pillow or in an outfit you love to wear often.  I’m not kidding if your favorite thing you wear is a hot pink t-shirt then that just might be the pop of happiness you need.  I’m not one for all matching, it’s just not a rule for me.  Adding that hot spot of color will wake up any room.

If you are painting a piece with cabinet doors or drawers the color explosion is endless.  The inside of the cabinet, the inside of the drawers or the outside of the drawers is a great place to add more color or even a stenciled design.   On this last table I used a stencil in a burnt orange color to pull the inside of the stained cabinet to the top of the table. It works because the tones are similar.  Other options are staining the top with that pop of color painted out on the rest of the piece.  Don’t limit your creativity with just one flat color. Adding strips in various sizes, over laying stencils or making your own design only adds to this colorful process. All three of these tables have Iron Orchid transfer added to them.  These can be purchased at Rustic Warehouse in Rockwall Texas.  There is a wide variety of designs and it only takes a few minutes to add them to your creative idea.

Go shop the local stores, look on Pinterest or Google ideas then make your own plan.  If painting a piece of your furniture scars you start with a piece you don’t really care about.  If you feel like you fail paint back over it in one solid color and you’ll be back at the beginning. Restoring what you have is so rewarding.  It’s like a piece of artwork you will love for more than the new look.  You will love the experience of creating and saving money is always a win.
