Unexpected Flip

September 15, 2015

You don’t have to flip houses to be a flipper, you just have to use the same method on anything you want to upgrade. From the first visit to my mother in law’s house I notice this paper plate holder hanging on the wall.  It was always there and still is today.

About a year ago my mother in law passed away and shortly after I found this in a thrift store.  I had no idea what to do with it but it reminded me of many good times at her house with the family.  I bought it because it was a reminder of her and her kitchen.  It has been sitting in my stash of furniture for months and has collected lots of dust.  I pulled it out because I was looking for something else and it hit me like a skillet up side the head.  I knew what to do with this, give it a new purpose and make it usable for everyday.

This one is a bit different – it’s not made to hang on the wall it has a base for sitting.  I started by cutting off the handle.  No sanding was needed it was very smooth and ready for paint. Before I started the paint I added a wood decal on the front, the word dream.  I used wood glue to attach it.  The dry time for the glue was about 4 hours.   I painted 2 coats of the dark gray and set it aside for drying.  Once dry I sanded the edges and corners for the worn look.   I finished it off with 3 coats of clear finish.

I’m sure you are still puzzled as to what it is.  Well my daughter and friends come by to swim all the time so in my guest bathroom I like to have hair items for them to use.  I thought this was a good way to store them . That way they are out and available for my guests. The word dream on the front really has no meaning other than its a pleasant word to read.  It makes you stop and think for a moment of your own dreams.

I will think of my mother in law every time I see it.  She loved to get her hair done and every time she visited she would ask me to do her hair.  She would almost fall asleep I think it was more about the relaxing than the do.  I miss her.

Always be on the look out for things that can be renewed and reused.  It can be something simple or something completely opposite of what it was before.  This little piece has made my bathroom counter top Blue Happy.  Go out and find what you can change to make you Blue Happy!

    1. Love it! Such a sweet story made me tear up because I miss my mother in law too. I used to do her hair and yes she fell asleep.

      1. I’m so glad my story gave you a moment to remember your mother in law. I didn’t always see eye to eye with my mother in law but we did love each other very much. She was the best mother I could have had. I just wish I would have had her earlier in my life. I married Greg at 21 she taught me so much cooking, cleaning just being a good southern wife. Love and miss her!
