More Than a Drawer!

October 23, 2015

I was working on a project and a friend stopped by to chat. I tried gracefully to make the conversation quick but she isn’t a quick conversation gal. So I walked back to my project without asking her to follow me. I knew she would be right on my heels. I had a table set up in my kitchen because my studio isn’t quite ready for work tables yet. She continued to talk and talk but all of a sudden she stopped talking. I looked up at her to see if she was breathing and she was with a weird look on her face. Is something wrong? Her response puzzled me a bit when she said “Are you kidding me girl? You are really stretching it with this project.” My response was, “what do you mean?” She said, “No one will buy this stupid idea.” Well, friend, I disagree.

This project is from an old drawer that we took out of our master bathroom when we remodeled. I decided to keep it because it had great bones and great dividers already built-in. The hubs had already put it on the trash pile I quietly pulled it back.   When we ripped it out of the bathroom I really had no plans for it but knew it would be a great project one day soon.

This past week I decided to start getting ready for the holidays. I like to reorganize my kitchen pantry and cabinets each year before the holidays so everything is ready come the week of Thanksgiving. I get rid of dishes I don’t need and make a list of new things I need. This makes the holidays go so much easier. When I got to my pantry I really needed an overhaul. It’s organized but it is a bit boring and it’s time for a change.

One of my biggest pet peeves would be the packages of seasoning, sugars and soup mixes. These things never sit well on the shelf so I have them all stacked in a basket. That works but you have to dig to find stuff and most of the time you over look items that are there because you can’t see them. In comes the old drawer from the trash pile to organizing storage.

I wanted it to look nice and not like I just put an old drawer in the pantry to store things in. I painted the drawer out in the same color as my kitchen cabinets inside and out. I also sanded the edges and added 4 coats of clear finish for protection. I didn’t have to add a handle because the drawer will not move once put in place. The pretty handle was for looks only because it made me happy. Who doesn’t need a little happy when you open your kitchen pantry?

Not everything that goes in the trash pile can be used. But if you need to organize a closet or shelf think outside the box. This drawer had the right bones just needed to be prettied up. It is a great piece added to my kitchen pantry that makes me Blue Happy. Remember that a happy home will be decorated in a way that is meaningful to you not others. I like this creative idea for pantry organization. What do you think?

Go be Blue Happy organized!
