$2.50 Makeover

March 11, 2016

There are those weekends that estate sales come up dry.  We had one of those weekends a few weeks ago and it looked like we would be empty-handed.  After 4 hours of nothing not one bargain we headed home.  On the way home we saw a sale that wasn’t on estatesale.net so we decided to free style and stop.  The house was almost empty as they were coming to the end of the day and sale.  The very nice lady said there are still a few things left in the garage.  So out the door we went hoping that our day would be saved by finding a steal of a deal in this garage.
No steals of deals, or master piece art but I did find this little wood letter holder. It was beautiful with carvings all over it.  I grabbed it up because the price was perfect $2.50 after 75% off It was dirty but that was no bother to me just needed a little elbow grease to do the trick.  After I cleaned and let it dry I started the process of the redo.  I like to challenge myself at times and only use paint and items I have left.  I don’t allow myself to buy any new product for the redo.  That way it keeps it interesting and I don’t waste even the smallest amount of product.

I had finished up a project a few weeks ago and had a very small bit of spray paint left in light blue.  It was just enough to give this letter holder a good solid coat.  I let it dry for about 2 hours before I started the glazing coat.  I added water to an almost empty jar of gray paint.  By adding the water it thinned the paint enough so that it ran down in the carving.  After you paint on the watered down paint you then wipe it off.  The gray paint is easily removed from he smooth surface but stays in the carved areas.  This process gives the piece a great old aged look. After drying for about 2 hours I added a spray clear coat to finish it off.  If the project is small a spray clear coat is good to use because it is easy and dries really fast.

It’s now ready to using it.  It could be used for holding letters and mail on your desk, or as a bar keep to hold bar utensils or maybe even a make up holder in the bathroom.  So many uses and so decoratively organized.  I’m going to be looking for more of these as the ideas in my head are growing.  I hope that you come back Monday to see a sad old coffee table become something spectacular.  Have a very Blue Happy Friday and weekend!
