I Always Ask

May 29, 2017

When I go to someones house to pick up a piece of furniture I always ask that one question as I’m about to leave. Thank you for letting me purchase this dresser from you do you have any small items made of wood you’d like to get rid of? Most always they say they do and I end up with at least one more item to purchase. This happened just a few weeks back as I picked up a dresser. She had this great little table she no longer wanted. She said it had damage to the top so I don’t know if you can do anything with it. Well 30 minutes and a good sanding made it totally ready for a Blue Happy treatment.

This little table is not real wood but in great condition and sturdy.  The top of the table is nothing more than press wood so the most important thing when I’m finished with the redo will be the clear coat finish. I sanded the top back to the raw press wood. I then sanded the body only on the edges and if it had damage.  There was damage on the under shelf so I had to blend that out to make it look like it was a worn area.  Once sanded, I used a Valspar glaze over the entire piece, including the top.  I chose a stencil that would cover most of the top and layered it with more stencils until I was happy with the look. Once those were dry I sanded most of it back off. I then used a wood stain to go over the top piece of the table.  The stain would give the press wood a bit more protection than the glaze.  I let that set up for about 4 hours then I did 4 layers of clear coat finish on the top.  I only did 2 on the base of the table. As an extra touch I added a hook on the front for extra storage of keys, dog leash or a small bag.

Once again a cheap  piece of furniture turned into a really nice piece with a bit of creativity and care.  It doesn’t have to be an expensive piece of furniture to make it great for your home.  It only needs to be redone in the right order to make it a winner. No matter what you have in your home you can remake a room with a punch of color.  It only takes a little time and a little creativity.  This piece can be added to any room in your home. My favorite would be just inside the door where you come home.  It would be great for charging your phone, using the hook for your keys and sitting your back pack or purse on the under shelf.
