The VANITY REVEAL

April 25, 2016

So after a very long week at school getting the art show ready we had an amazing show.  These kids are so talented and I’m so blessed to get to teach them.  So many people came through the show and at times seemed shocked at what they saw.  I’m shocked every year after it’s all up and on display.  Believe it or not you forget all the amazing things they paint because we move from one project to the other.  After the show I crashed but got up on Sunday with energy to finish up the vanity

It was a mess this top piece thing really stressed me to a point I just wanted to push it in the back of the shop and forget it. I not a person that doesn’t finish things so I decided to just dive in and make it happen.  You know how sometimes bad things turn out to be good well that is what happened.  I started lifting off the wood that bubbled up and beneath was a beautiful piece of wood just waiting to be uncovered and stained.  I was afraid if I didn’t paint it I couldn’t do what I wanted to do originally.  I sanded the top off and made sure it was clean and smooth.  I then covered the top of the vanity with a piece of lace and lightly spray painted over the top with the color rose gold.  Then I used a few stencils around one end of the vanity top.  After  I was happy with the design I used dark ebony stain and brushed it all over the top and right over the spray paint.  I finished it off by using an old t-shirt and wiping away what stain didn’t soak in.  The results are fantastic and I’m so in love with the outcome.  I will be doing this many more times in the future.

To the rest of the vanity I did my usual 2 coats of paint, followed by sanding the edges and 2 good clear coats to finish it off.  I went all through my collection of hardware and even went shopping but never found anything.  Then I saw a few knobs sitting on my work bench and thought perfect, white with a touch of gold.  Then I giggled a bit cause I realize these were the original knobs I took off.  So the not so perfect knobs were perfect.

Every vanity needs a bench to sit at so I went to my collection of furniture and I had this little beauty.  The tag on it said I bought it at Rusty’s auction for $10 so to my studio it went to be redone and up cycled into a vanity bench.  I painted it out to match the vanity and recovered the seat.  I went with this dark green fabric with a design done in gold thread.  It’s the perfect little bench and compliments the vanity as well.

I love the way this left for trash vanity and cheap $10 bench came out.  I truly believe that you don’t have to spend a lot to have a beautiful piece of furniture in your home.  It doesn’t matter what it is just a little sanding and paint can go a long way.  This vanity and bench is for sale if you are interest let me know it’s $150.  By far it isn’t perfect but the imperfections make it beautiful.  I will be posting it on other sites on Wednesday the 27th so make sure you grab it before then.  I hope that you have a Blue Happy Monday cause it is the best days of the week.
