Epic Fail Vanity

April 22, 2016

Even the best laid plans don’t go as planned.  That was surely the case with this vanity.  I was rocking along just doing a few things here and there waiting for that first no rain day.  Well we had a few afternoons that were clear but I was a t school teaching.  I managed to get it all painted with 2 coats at different times.  I was worried about the moisture in the air but it all seemed to be going great until today!

I had arranged my day so I could do the final treatment to the top of the vanity.  I had one class to teach and then free to make my design reality.  As I wrapped things up and get things out to start I noticed a weird crack on the front edge of the top.  I didn’t think much of it but when I did a more detailed investigation it wasn’t just a crack it was the paint and wood separating.  I thought that I had dodged a bullet.  I  painted a few times in the garage with the garage door open and it was raining, I know better than that. Not only did the paint bubble and peel but the thin wood lifted.

We all make mistakes and this one is gonna cost me my free time on Sunday.  So how do I fix this without giving up my design idea? I will start by sanding the top surface to get almost all the paint off followed by a good wipe down to the entire piece.  I will need to repaint the top surface with two layers of paint.  I’ll need to give each layer drying time of about 2 hours between coats.  Then I’ll get to start my design process.  I’m still not gonna let that cat out of the bag, but I will share with you a few things I’m using.  Clearly you can see that I picked a light gray color called Primitive Gray.  It,  along with the mint green got the most votes.  I went with the light gray so it would blend into more homes.  This piece will be for sale on Monday.

The bench is turning out fantastic. The fabric is a bit neutral with gold accents.  It is also painted out in the primitive color with light sanding to make it very shabby chic.  The bench fabric and shabby chic look compliments the vanity very nicely.  I’m hoping that Monday this project is one for the books and finished.  Please let the rain stop for at least the weekend.

We all make plans that don’t go as we want.  It’s sometimes hard to except when things go wrong but we just have to step passed it and move on.  Sitting and dwelling on what should have been or what if really doesn’t get us that time back it only waste the time we are in.  I’m moving on to my new plan to finish this project.  I’ve learned a bit from this and that’s not to rush a project cause that doesn’t get you anywhere.  I hope that your Friday is full of fun and Blue Happy moments.  Have a great weekend!!
