Small Project, Big Impact

May 9, 2016

Have you ever thought about the little things that make you happy or turn your bad day into a great day. I have seen it many times with many people. My daughter can be having the worst day ever and I can bring her a Starbucks and it flips her day to the good side. I’m one of those people who it doesn’t take much to get me in a good mood. Sometimes it happens when someone surprises me like I do my daughter and sometimes you have to make it happen.

My week was long, hard and fast. My high school class ended on Friday, I’m preparing for my Jr high and littles to finish by this Wednesday and it was gonna be Mothers Day weekend so my plate was full. On Saturday I woke up really early as always and really wasn’t in the mood for my to-do list. For a bit I wondered around my house fiddling with things that really wasn’t that important. I found myself standing at the door of my studio with the urge to be creative. On the table in the back corner I have this little box that I’ve been wanting to paint. I’m not sure what I’m gonna do with it but I wanted to do something artsy to it from the day I bought it at an auction. It is one of those hand-made tool totes that I love so much. I didn’t have a plan or an idea so I started looking around my studio for ideas hoping something would strike my fancy. I have tons of things to use on these pieces so I decided to just look through it all. I love doing that I come across things I haven’t thought of in a while and I get so inspired by it all.

Paint colors seem to strike me first with the beautiful avocado green on the inside with the cream-white on the outside. Just before I started to paint I remembered these great stencils of words I had in my stencil box. At first I was only gonna use one of the words but before I knew it I had stuck words on each side of the tool tote and on the top of the handle. I love the way the stencil still allows you to see the old wood around the letters like its a window.  These are the greatest stencils you place them where you want them paint over them and then remove them for perfect lettered words. Once I was done painting I let it dry for a while then removed the stencils. I wanted it to keep the old worn look of the tool tote so I sanded edges and surface areas to remove a bit of the paint. I finished it off with a coat of clear finish in semi gloss.

While I was working on this project it came to me what to do with it. I have a friend I need a gift for and this will be perfect for her. She loves words of inspiration and I know she will love this as well.

Before I knew it Greg was standing in the door asking if I was gonna stay in the studio all day. I realized I had creatively given myself a better day. I was relaxed, distressed and ready to take on my day. I finished my weekend with Mothers Day at church. I felt so blessed my daughter and son-in-law were on my left and my son and his bride to be on my right. What a great gift to have them all there in church. Sometimes we need to just block our minds and do something that relaxes us. It can make us a happier person if we just take an hour and step out of our business. Maybe you need that today or maybe someone you know needs that and you can help them out. I do know that it’s Monday the best day of the week with a brand new start. I hope that you have a Blue Happy Day!!
