KAPOW!

December 28, 2016

KAPOW! The vanity is finally finished for my daughter. This piece was a job that went on forever it seemed. So many parts and pieces that needed much care. So where to start to tell you where each piece came from. I will say the total cost of this vanity for all 3 piece was $56. Thats crazy right but here is the break down. The mirror was purchased at an estate sale one sunny Saturday morning for half price so I snagged it for $20. One morning my friend Terri called me and said her friend was having a sale and she had this old desk that was $25. I went to McKinney and loved it so home it came with me. I’ve had it in storage for a bit but I wasn’t sure what or who I would do it for. It had great bones but I knew it had more than a desk in it. The final piece to make this all complete is the vanity stool. I got this from Rustybydesignauction.com for only $11. The total cost of $56 wouldn’t even buy the stool brand new. Restore, reuse and pocket the savings.

Now lets break it down on what happened to each piece. It goes without saying that I sanded all 3 pieces. The bottom of the desk, the drawer pulls, the mirror and the stool was all painted out in the Valspar antique white, edges and corners sanded and clear coated. The drawers and the desk top was stained with the mix I made up to match my daughters new bed. The inside and the outside box of the drawers were painted out in yellow. You can’t see this but she will get a bit of sunshine when she opens up a drawer.

I added a few special touched to give it my daughters personality. On the mirror I added hardware that had old brass edging and that matches the hardware that adjust the mirror. I also added lining so that make up dust could be easily cleaned as it gets used. Inside the top drawer I added whimsical stencil only to give my daughter a special reminder that time is precious to spend it wisely. The fabric on the stool I grabbed from a ben of fabric she had collected. I knew that she loved it so it was the perfect piece to finish off the stool. The rope around the stool was left over from pillows made for her as a Christmas gift.

All 3 pieces work together and compliment each other , all 3 pieces now have a restored life.  I can see her sitting here putting on her make-up and fixing her beautiful hair. I loved it when she was little and she played make-up. She had a play vanity set and used it for years. I was glad she ask me to make this for her. I can see many years of her and Scarlett playing make-up together. These are the moments Blue Happy memories are made from. Have a blessed Wednesday!
