Watching Growth and Saying Good Bye

December 1, 2016

Wow,  just like that we are at the end of another year and saying good bye to another year.  Soon 2016 just a memory to relish and look back on.  I don’t know how you started your first day of December but I started mine watching a great play, drum line, children choir and the growth of a program to feed children fine arts.

The school I teach at is small but growing.  When I started ten and a half years ago our fine arts department was me and 9 kids in art class.  Thats it  just art and the classes grew to record numbers.  We began to add classes and children began to come and sign up. We added the name enrichment to the name Fine Arts Department so that we could cover many classes that enriched a child’s life.  We as a team of teachers have worked so very hard to make this program grow.  I would dare say this year we have turned a corner.  We aren’t running a speed race over here  but we are building speed! So watch out, here we come.

The importance of fine arts enrichment in a child’s life is sometimes overlooked.  Parents and their money can only be stretched so far.  Most parents pick sports to be the high-ranking activity in the home.  I believe your child can learn so much from sports.  You know the list team play, good sportsmanship and so on and so on.  Fine arts can also teach your child things as well.  I’m not saying one or the other I’m just saying that maybe in the off-season give your child the gift to explore, that is all.

When our theater teacher came to me as said I found this place to do our performance at, but it cost.  I told her let’s go the route of paper work required and we will see. We have never charged before, We have never had to fill so many seats to make it pay for its self and oh my what if we don’t fill the seats.  She was spot on we filled the seats and there where people standing on the sides and in the back.

The evening started with our youngest singing and performing Christmas carols led by a teacher that jumped in at the last-minute to teach. We had not filled the music teachers position just a few days before school started. God is so good and put her in this position.  She is amazing and these kids sang loud, clear and with so much heart.  The drum line came up next with 5 members this is a new program that started just last year.  Two members were on the from line last year, but 3 were brand new.  You couldn’t have known there were new members by their performance at all.  They were stunning, loud and strong.  Our praise band came up and did the intermission.  I almost cried when sweet Melissa sang “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”.  I have known Melissa for many years.  When her pig tails were lope sided and her shoes were never tied.  Those pig tails have turned to long fixed beautiful hair with classic boots and a smile to die for.  I have watched so many of these kids grow up.  Every time one graduates it’s like watching one of my own leave.

The night was finished off with 2 short plays and like I said a house filled to watch them.  Every kid in the plays were magnificent.  Good direction was clearly given to these kids.  Every play our teacher of this class worries and frets if it will all go over as planned.  I have one thing to say STOP worrying you have arrived and your direction of these kids is spot on.  We are a small school at times we have stood at the door of oops now what  when we didn’t have what we needed for a program.  We have borrowed items, found items, had fund-raisers and I’m pretty sure some of us has begged a bit, all with pride.  God is so good and has always made sure that we have what we need and the means to find it and get it if we need it.  I’m over whelmed and proud of this little school and the Fine Arts Enrichment program.  We are standing at a very Blue Happy moment.  I hope Wednesday was blessed for you and Blue Happy memories were made.
