A Mix and Match Makeover

August 22, 2018

For a while we have been storing a friends extra bedroom furniture in our guest room. Our kids moved out and left our guest room empty of furniture. It was perfect timing he needed to store furniture for a while and we had an empty room. Now he is off to another city with a job transfer and a bigger home. I was left with an empty guest room.

I didn’t want to spend a lot so I set out with a budget of $500 to redo the entire room. What did that look like and what did it include? I need a full size bed with bed coverings.  I love pillows to me the more the better life is.  I also needed a mattress and box springs along with a bed skirt.  I’ve sold my end tables out of this room over and over so I need to find one I keep and not let go of.  I want to paint an accent wall around the big beautiful window that has shutters.  To finish it off I’ll put up sliding barn doors over the closet.  That seems like a very long list but I’m sure I’ll hit my budget target.

Tonight I’m going to share the bed with you.  I found almost all of it at an estate sale.  Last weekend I went to a home in a VERY up scale neighborhood.  I purposely did  that looking for a mattress that was on the new to hardly used side.  Most of these big homes have tons of rooms and you can tell if the bed was in a room that was hardly used.  BINGO I found one for $197 along with a bed skirt for $12.  The sheet set was from a home in my own neighborhood for $6.  I bought 4 new pillows at Walmart for $22. The quilted light blue bed cover was at an estate sale 3 weeks ago and I only paid $7. I love putting a quilt on the end of a bed so if you need extra covers it right there.  I bought this quilt over a year ago for $25.  That leaves us to the head-board.  I found it in the back room of a sale and it was being over looked because it was in a room with some top of the line furniture.  Those interested in the more modern new furniture had no interest in this 1970 head-board.  I did and I loved the design on the top.  I could see it farmhouse white with the wood sanded to show through.  It was a very easy redo with no repairs and for $25 I couldn’t beat that. That is a grand total of $294. I will be finishing up this room and sharing it with you when it is all done.  I need to finish it up by the holiday’s so you be seeing blogs really soon.

No one has to spend a fortune to redo or finish out their home.  It’s easy to redecorate if you are willing to take the time to look for what you want.  You can find any style of items you are interested in at estate sales.  You just have to know the areas of value near where you will be shopping.  I love farmhouse so I look for the older homes with antiques.  I went to an up scale neighborhood to look for the bedding so I knew it was well cared for or hardly used.  This bed is a win for the McCormick house hold.  I can’t wait to show you the rest of the room and how I saved money.
