A Happy Home: Revels – Entryway

This is a guest post from Heather Revels. This is the first in a series featuring Blue Happy Living pieces in their new homes. Interested in having your home featured? Email Heather by clicking here.

Remember me? I’m Heather, LaTonya’s daughter. Hello, again! Before I show you how Blue Happy Living has impacted my home, let me give you some back story.

I lived with my parents until I married my husband, Clint, in 2010. My first experience with decorating a home was an interesting one because Clint had already purchased a home that he turned into a video gamer’s paradise. The walls were dark grey and all the furniture was black leather. Yikes. I did my best to add some of my own personality to that home but we weren’t there long and honestly, I didn’t know what I was doing! Mostly, I thrifted and borrowed and made do with most of what was already there. I didn’t care too much because we were young and in love. Ha!

In our next home, I wanted to branch out a bit and start exploring my own style! So, like any sane person, I went to the paint counter at Home Depot and picked the first color that spoke to me. BRIGHT PURPLE. Yep. There was this huge wall in the family room that really did need some kind of design element. Looking back, I should have filled it with family photos or some great art, but instead, I came home with two giant cans of purple paint and set to work. There was only one problem, the ceilings were higher than my ladder plus my short stature could reach. So what did I do? I left the top 3-4 feet of the ceiling unfinished the entire time we lived there, naturally. Ugh.

I continued to make questionable design choices in that home that really make me laugh now. I did learn some valuable lessons from those experiences, though.

  • Be patient. It’s good to be excited to decorate your space but take your time developing your own personal style and finding the furniture, decor, colors that really suit you.
  • Your home is your sanctuary. Design and organize your home so that it brings you peace and joy. I’m still working on this!
  • Color is GREAT but consider adding it in through your art, pillows, rugs, and other decor first, before adding it to your walls, to see how it suits you.

Blue Happy Living - bench in customer home

This is one of my favorite spots in my current home. This entryway is filled with so much light and it’s so peaceful. I sit on this bench often to read books, chat with visiting friends (and my mom), or just snuggle with my dogs. The bench was a Blue Happy Living piece that I took right out of her home. She had it at the end of her bed and when I moved I asked ever-so-sweetly (as daughters do) for her permission to use it where it can be seen and appreciated. She passed it along with a smile, of course, because it brings her joy to bless others. The plant stand is also from a stash of things she had set aside to go to one of her stores.

Here’s the real secret of this space (and much of my home): my mom. Many of the pieces pictured in this entryway were either gifted by or inspired by my mom. Through the years she taught me how to fill a home with things that evoke feelings of joy… ON A BUDGET.

My home isn’t perfect by any means, but thanks to my mom’s wisdom and extraordinary talent, I have a home that I’m proud to call my own.
