You Can Create Tuesday: tile coasters

July 14, 2015

I’m so excited about this project that I’m sharing with you today! Anyone can do it and it is customizable to your home and needs. I’ve done this project with my kids at school for mother’s day gifts but I’m going to take it a few steps more with you.  Tiles are not just for the walls, floors and showers.  Tiles can be great hot plates, coasters or just art on an easel on the shelf.  I’m going to show you some really cool ways I’m using tile in my home.

Blue happy - art project - tile supplies

Let’s get all our supplies in a pile on the table so we can have everything in reach. Here’s what you will need:

  • Tiles from any home improvement store
  • enamel paint from  any arts and craft store
  • brushes in a couple of sizes
  • Modge podge for outdoor surfaces
  • scrap book paper in several designs
  • stencils that are small
  • felt pads

Art project - tile coasters

On my first tile I only used stencils and paint.  I decided on my colors and what stencils to use and just followed my inspiration.  There is no right or wrong to this on how you lay it out.  You don’t have to worry because if you mess up just go to the sink and wash it off.  Make sure you dry it well before starting again.

Art project - tile coasters scrapbook paper

The second tile is the scrapbook paper and a butterfly stencil.  I first ripped my paper into small pieces then using the outdoor Mod Podge I attached the paper to the tile in a random style.  After it dried I stenciled the butterfly to the bottom edge.

Blu Happy Living - art project - large tile

The third tile is also just the paint and stencils but I used an odd shape tile to use as a large coaster or to put a hot pot on in the kitchen.  I think I use this one the most!

The final step on whatever design you choose is to cover the top of the tile with a layer of the outdoor Modge Podge so it seals the design in place. Once that drys you can place the felt pads on the bottom so it won’t  scratch up your surface.

HELPFUL HINTS: These tile are not dish washer safe so just wipe  it off with a warm soapy rag and rinse. Also the tiles that just have paint you can follow the baking instructions on the side of the paint bottle and not add the outdoor Modge Podge.

Projects like these are fun for the entire family.   Ethan my sweet grandson loved painting these with Lolli.  Sometimes it’s not about the project it’s about the Blue Happy time spent together.
