Creative Studio Space

August 4, 2015

Where are the paints, glue and crayons? These are question  you hear all the time.  It drives me crazy to look for supplies when the creative juices are flowing.  You don’t have to have an art studio room or building just a small area.   It’s hard to stop in the middle of your idea when you have stop and look for a supply. So let’s explore a creative way to create a studio space for the family.

I have a studio that is being built in the back yard of  my home.  I have always for many years had a studio in or at my home.  I find it easy to create when everything I will need is all in one place for me to grab.  You don’t have to have a large room or building you can make a studio at a desk or in a closet.  I have seen a few of my friends who had a tub system with all their creative materials.

If you are short on space like my daughter Heather all you will need is a closet door.  Heather bought an over the door shoe hanger to organize her and Ethan’s art supplies.  She hung it on the inside of a hall closet where she has a tub system with all her larger creative supplies like fabric.  Inside each pocket of the door hanger she put smaller items like glues, glitter, stickers and so much more.  On art days with Ethan its easy to find what they need and easy to put it all away.

If you are lucky enough to have a desk or table area for your studio space GREAT! Make sure that you have small containers to organize your smaller items.  I love to keep small butter dishes paint and label them with what is inside.  It makes your area fun and colorful.

There are so many ways to fill your creative studio space.  I do not like to spend money on new things when you have so many things that can be reused.  I love love love veggie cans! I remove the labels and of course wash them out.  I decorate them with paint, ribbon and stickers, clearly the sky is the limit.  Because they  come in so many sizes it helps in organizing all kinds of items.

There are many items we all have we toss out daily.  Shoe boxes are great for markers, pencils and brushes.  Don’t just put the boring shoe box on the shelf decorate the box with your personality.  I also like glass jars from pickles, jelly and even Mayo they are so much fun.  Put a small circle or oval on the front using chalk paint.  By doing that you can use a chalk pen and change what the jar is used for simply by changing the name on the front.

I could go on and on about ways to set up a creative place.  The most important thing is to just make a place for you or the family to be creative.  The holidays are just around the corner how cool to have a place to make Christmas gifts, invitations or cards for the family.  In the future I will do a blog about my new studio.  The studio in my back yard is being build out of old doors, windows and scrap lumber.  I’m so excited to share it with you soon. I simple get giggly and Blue Happy when I think about it. Go find you a space to get your Blue Happy on.
