Old to New Redo

August 5, 2015

You see these all the time in garage sales, thrift stores and on top of trash on trash day.  Most people don’t use these little guys anymore so they have been tossed away.  I think these magazine racks just need to be repurposed and given new life.

I didn’t have to think far outside the original use of the magazine rack to redo it.  For those of you who are readers this is perfect.  I noticed every time I went to my daughter’s house she had a stack of books and a Nook next to her bed.  Oh and the stack of books by her spot on the couch is always there.  Yes my daughter is a reader and she reads daily to my grandson.  He loves his books.  He also has a stack of books by his bed.  So that is the idea for the redo just make it over into a book rack.

This little magazine rack came from a garage sale and I paid $2 for it.  The first thing I did was lightly sand it and wipe it down.  I applied 2 coats of black paint and let it dry completely.  I sanded the edges and corners to give it that worn look we all know I love so much.  Adding 2 coats of clear to give it protection finished it off.   I could have called it finished but wanted to add the burlap flowers and ribbon to give it a personal touch. With paints, ribbon and flowers total cost for the redo was just under $11.

The idea is to look at what you have and find a new use for the item.  Like the magazine rack you don’t have to look to far outside of the box.  Most of us can walk in any room and point to at least one item that is  collecting dust, I know I can.  Maybe you have a magazine rack and know someone or a child that needs a book rack.  There is no limit how you can decorate it.  Make it all pink and add lace, paint it white and add things about a little boy or just paint it out a color to match a bath room or living area.

Whatever you decide to do with it or whatever you decide to redo make it something that is helpful in organizing your family.  Organization can be so Blue Happy.
