Surrounded by Favorite Things

October 21, 2015

If I have a long day or a day that is less than what I expected I love coming home. My home is a place of comfort for me to crawl back to and reboot. I have made my home from things I love, things that make me feel good and make me happy.

In my younger days I always thought that new was better and the more it cost the better it was. Not so true to my thinking any more. Many times I would decorate my home or apartment and when I was done it still never seemed right. It was never right because I was trying to decorate to make my home loved by everyone else. I bought things that were popular that had nothing to do with me and what my home should be.

After many sofas and lots of tables, chairs and nick naks I finally found my place in the world of decorating. I discovered that having things around you that make you happy helps you prepare for life outside the home. It gives you a sense of being hugged when you walk in your back door.

I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite things in my home that make me happy and why. I’ll start with admitting I’m afraid of the dark. Yes I’m 50 years old and I don’t like all the lights off in my home. When we remodeled the master bathroom my sweet husband gave me a gift he found at an estate sale. It was a tiny little lamp that I use every night. It is just enough light to guide my feet to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Over the years I have received many gifts from students and I cherish them all. A few years ago I had a graduating Senior give me a beautiful clock. The card that was in the box said “Thank you so much for the time you spent teaching me” I love that student and love this clock. I think of that student every time I come out of my bedroom and see it.

My family is a mix of a lot of different eating issues. Our friends always laugh at us when they come to a dinner or cookout. My husband and I eat very healthy and don’t eat bread, rice or pasta, My daughter has Celiac Disease and doesn’t eat any type of Gluten, my son and his girlfriend of 5 years, Ali, don’t eat meat. I cook to please them all so there is always 3 tables of food in our home one table for everybody, one gluten-free and one meat free. I always make little signs and place them on the table as to what type of food it is, but the signs always get misplaced. I found these great little card holders at Magnolia Market to hold my food signs. These 3 little pigs will come in handy this holiday season. Oink Oink! (Click the link above to purchase some yourself!)

I’m not a dish person but on an estate sale Saturday run with David and Janice I found a happy little plate set. It was so beautiful and had a matching piece with it. I’m sure at one time it was a full set and served a family well but now it was 2 pieces that no one was looking at. I bought it and gave it a place in my open shelves in my kitchen.

There are many other things I love in my home and I will share them in future blogs.  I love and always have watermelon in my frig, Charmin in my bathroom and Clairol dark brown hair dye in my bathroom closet.  Not only decorating things make you happy it’s the other little things in your home that complete you and make you happy. I’m just being honest with my readers.

Those are a few things in my home that make me Blue Happy. I hope that you have surrounded yourself with things that make you happy. Life is short to be surrounded by piles of mail, laundry and dirty dishes. Go be Blue Happy!
