One Pantry Box Done!

November 28, 2016

In my kitchen I have a very odd pantry. It’s like a very large closet that isn’t walk in but with lots of shelves that are tall. Then there is the odd open space at the bottom with no shelves there. If you want to use that space you have to sit stuff on the floor. GROSSSSSSSSSSS! That is just not gonna happen in my house. Things you use in your kitchen should not be sitting on the floor.

About 6 years ago our first Christmas in our home I found a jewel a neighbor tossed out. It was a very large blue box sitting on the curb just asking to come home with me. I tossed it in my then Kia and home it went to be the perfect size for my kitchen pantry. I use it in that open spot on the floor to hold my extra’s. Like paper towels, dog food and many other things I need extra space for.

I’m sure by now you think I’m gonna show you my pantry and that all so great blue box, NOPE. That will be a later blog on some cold winter day in Texas. When I’m back on my feet and I can show you how I organized my pantry to work for Greg and I. This blog is about my daughters new pantry. What is up with these builders stopping the shelving about 2 feet off the floor. Please take the shelves all the way to the bottom like a real built-in shelf. Heather is a lucky girl her daddy built her a pantry box, well with a little help from me. I’m sorry there are no before pictures. I can’t find the before anywhere I’ve looked everywhere but they are no where to be found.

One morning when they were still living with us I helped her put the kids in the car. As I walked back into the house I noticed that my neighbor Lisa had put an old wardrobe on the curb. It was in bad shape but the drawers still had life in them. I grabbed them all and put them in my storage unit. When Heather and Clint’s new house was done the day they moved in I noticed the shelf thing in the pantry. I complained about it all the way home to Greg. I’ll build her a box a box he said, so we did.

After doing a few repairs to the box we joined them sitting side by side. Greg put bracing on the bottom to attach the wheels and to give the drawers more support. Where the drawers were attached it looked a bit unfinished so we added trim. Now it’s my turn I sanded the drawers inside and out. I used the same stain I have been using on all the other furniture in her new home. The inside of the drawers were painted the antique white like her kitchen table set. Once all was dry I used steel wool on the outside of the box to give it a smooth finish. Making sure it can be wiped off easy I gave it 3 coats of poly. The hardware was missing from the front of the drawers when I found them so I dug in my stash and these were perfect.

We delivered it just in time because she was about to start to organize her pantry. She promises pictures when she is done. There is so much furniture being put out to the trash. Think about all your needs in your home and make a list. Watch for those things on the side of the road. Trash trolling is the new shopping if you ask me. LOL I’m serious people! Hope your Monday is Blue Happy after all it’s the best day of the week.
