Modern to Farmhouse It Can Be Done

November 16, 2018

We all have that piece of furniture that just doesn’t fit anymore.  It’s a style that you no longer want in your home.  That is exactly what Maria told me about this modern table.  She almost got rid of it.  It was made up of modern lines and color.  It was about as far away from farmhouse style as you could get.  She trusted me when I said I could make it fit into her farmhouse style.  I’m glad she did because I enjoyed doing this piece and proving my point.  You don’t have to by new just make what you have fit your needs.

A piece like this shouldn’t take that long for me to do, but this was drawn out a few extra days.  Texas weather has been a bit of a bear these past few weeks with rain, 27 degree mornings, high winds and misery.  So it slows my work process with drying time.  The client wanted a paint that was directed towards her kitchen cabinets.  It was like a cream taupe.  I mixed a few of the Chalk Country Paints to come up with a custom color.   First up the to get rid of that orange stain on top and prepare it for a new stain color.  I always paint out the edge first and once it dry’s I sand back the top.  I do this to protect the wood.  The stain and clear coat protects the paint from soaking into the wood.  So by painting and then sanding I get a great seamless line between the paint and stain.  Once that is done I finish out my paint job and stain the top.  I went a little light on the sand back so that not to much of that orange stain came through.

This piece will be in a family home so protecting the surface was the next step.  I used Defender from Chalk Country Paint.  I gave the sides 2 coats and the top got 3.  The original handle wasn’t really a farmhouse look so I switched it out for a more ornate handle. The hardware gave it that final push into the farmhouse style.  The style and shape are a modern contemporary style that can’t be changed.  Taking the time to add paint, sanding and hardware flipped this piece in another direction.

So many times I see people toss out furniture.  Most people will tell you it didn’t fit with the direction I was going in my home.  If you take a moment to stop and think a little outside the box you might find a better solution.  Spend money on new isn’t always the best route to follow.  Saving money to buy other things you don’t have is the best way to decorate.  Before you go out shopping think first about what you can change to adapt to your home.
