In A Rut and Spinning My Wheels

March 1, 2019

We get in a rut as to what things are and can be. I’ve never been one to think that there is only one purpose to what we have or one purpose to people. Reinventing things is one of the joys of this creative world of mine. Six and a half years ago I decided to reinvent myself. I started with a simple plan to get healthy and before I knew it God showed me a plan that was completely different. For me it really was a moment of, this has to change. I didn’t want to lose my momentum so I ran as fast as I could to get help, to change the bad in my life and to get out of this rut.

My choice to change my life was quiet drastic. Not for the faint of heart are all the surgeries and scares. Along with being a person that thinks outside the box I’m a person that will take the road hardest traveled. I’m also the person that takes the hard road when sometimes I don’t need to. I did what I did because I felt like I was watching a movie. A movie about my dying life. It was as if I could see myself from above, it was sad and heartbreaking. Somewhere in the mist of it all I decided to jump in the movie and change my ending. My ending has definitely changed and life is so much sweeter.

When I pick up furniture I like to think about what else can it be. Is it just a dresser, table or shelf or can it be something more with this or that added to it. Sometimes you don’t have to add much to make a piece go in a different direction. The piece I’ve been working on I bought at Rusty’s auction as a buffet for a dinning room. At first I wasn’t really sure what else it could be but once in my studio my mind ran with so many different ideas.

This piece is painted out in Crisp Collar from Chalk Country Paint. Most of the time I don’t paint out the inside but this piece had lots of stains. In order to make those stains go away I had to use Defender clear coat on the inside first. This will seal the stains so that no bleeding through the paint. Once that was dried and 2 coats of paint was finished and dried I did my shabby chic sand back. I love the way the inside panels of the doors look like shiplap. This piece is very well made by Thomasville. It was so well made that the back was finished out in the same quality of wood. That is where my creative mind started down a different path. If I painted out the back panel just like the rest of the piece then this furniture becomes so much more. I added wheels to the bottom to make it mobile and multipurpose. How many ways can it be used now. Well here’s a few Blue Happy ways……….

The laundry room is where we all need a little bit of help. The ability to fold out the top for a folding table is brilliant. Because of the wheels you could move it away from the wall or even in another room. You could add baskets underneath for laundry or supplies.

Have you always wanted to add a center island to your kitchen. Well this piece would be great. Keep the top as is or when you need more counter space fold out the top. You could also use a couple of stools when you have it folded outdoor extra seating.  Holiday cooking just got easier.

Using it as a buffet for the dining room is also great. Having it on wheels allows you to use this piece in more than one way on any day.

Look around your home are there things you have that are in a rut.  Can they be repurposed into something different.  What about life, are there things that you are spinning your wheels on?  Give yourself the gift of taking a different route out of the rut.  Small changes make a big difference.
