Whimsical Redo

September 8, 2015

I love things that are different. I like to surround myself and my family with items they will only see in my home. If you have things in your home that make you smile and even giggle then your home is a happy and unique home.

I love whimsical and fun when I’m designing. I found this little piece in an online auction rustybydesignauction.com and I fell in love with it. I knew just where I would put it and how I would use it. I use essential oils and the little bottles are sitting on my night stand. I thought this little cabinet would be great to hold them.

I gave it a light sand and repaired a couple of the drawers with wood glue. I used a light blue and gave it 2 coats. As always, I like the worn look so I sanded off the corners and edges. 2 coats of clear finish and then sat it aside to dry.

Once dry I drilled the wholes in the drawers for the new knobs. I wanted to use what I had so I decided on a mix and match look. This is what gave me my whimsical moment. The 3 smaller drawers on the bottom I used the original knobs that were on the cabinet when I got it.

I hung it on the wall just to the side of my pillow over my night stand. It is great for my essential oils and my glasses. The little pocket on the bottom where my glasses are will be great to keep my phone cord when I’m not using it. I finished it off with a few special items on the top shelf.

This little cabinet is a great whimsical decorative piece and it has function. These little cabinets were very popular in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. You can find them in thrift stores, garage sales and auction. They just need a little creative TLC and they can once again be a part of your home.

Whimsical decor can only make you Blue Happy. Go find that piece to redo that will add whimsical Blue Happy to your home!
